Bike Barn
The Bike Barn is a bike shop located on campus run by the ASUCD. The only time you really should use the Bike Barn is if you need to pump your tires or if you need to borrow a tool. Otherwise, you may find yourself overpaying and waiting a very long time for a simple repair. For example, my freshman year, one of my tubes decided to pop so I brought it in to the Bike Barn. They told me it would take a week to replace the tube so I bought one for $13 and began replacing it myself. A few months later, when my tube popped again, I decided to go purchase my tube at Ken’s Bike and Ski. The tube cost $6 and they replaced it right there in a few minutes for a few dollars more. If you look at the comments on the Davis Wiki page for Bike Barn, you will find that overcharging and slow service is a common occurrence. Because Davis is a bike town, you will not have much trouble finding a nearby shop for your biking needs, where you probably will find better prices and better service.
With high prices and slow service, the Bike Barn really does not help students as much as possible. Fortunately the Bike Barn makes enough money to not need to be subsidized by ASUCD fees, but if that ever changes, keeping the Bike Barn the way it is will only be a disservice to students.
