KDVS
KDVS is a radio station licensed to provide noncommercial and educational broadcasting to Yolo and Sacramento County. They mainly play very obscure songs and some might even think that they are getting weird background noise when tuning to 90.3FM in the Davis area. Supposedly, those training to be DJs for KDVS hear a story about how a DJ got into trouble for playing a song from a band that he or she has never heard of, but the band was not obscure enough. Basically, those opposing KDVS would describe the station as an elitist obscurist’s wet dream. Of course, this would not be a problem at all if they ran purely on money from fundraisers instead of money from students. If a few people want to run a radio station that plays songs that some people would consider to be noise and were willing to pay out of their own pockets or run fundraisers, that is perfectly fine, but forcing every student at UC Davis to pay for this is absolutely not. Since 2006, the radio station has been taking at least $40,000 a year in subsidies, courtesy of each undergraduate student on campus.
